Our Retirees

Tierra

Tierra was born in 1996 at a Premarin facility in Canada. Premarin is a hormone replacement therapy made from Pregnant Mare Urine. Mares are impregnated and then their urine is collected and purified to then be used in humans as a hormone replacement. The foals born from this process used to be considered "trash" foals and often ended up at slaughter. Tierra was shipped to Colorado as a weanling where Trails End Founder Angela purchased her when she was an 18 year old college student. She has lived with Angela ever since and has done almost every discipline imaginable including carriage driving, herding cattle, parades, costume contests, judged trail riding,  and obstacles. Tierra spent 4 years as an equine therapist helping veterans and people with disabilities. She is the queen bee at Trails End and is the oldest retiree we currently have. Recently her DNA test revealed that she is a Haflinger/Belgian Cross.

Con Sealed (Connor)

Connor is a Standardbred born in 2001 and started his early career as a harness racing horse. He won $21K before his owner passed away unexpectedly and he was turned over to a rescue organization. He spent many years as a pleasuring driving horse and then a trail horse. He was passed around many times before getting injured and almost euthanized. Trails End saved him from a very sad fate. He is currently part of our Foster/Companion program and lives with a wonderful family. He serves as a companion to another retired racehorse and they are the best of friends.

Renee

Renee is a quarter horse born in 2000 and we don't know much about her early life. She eventually became a kids lesson horse at a large camp and lesson facility. She was leased out in the winter to a family and returned every summer for camp. Eventually that family purchased her and then she was leased to a therapeutic riding program where she worked as a therapy horse for a whopping ten years. At the age of 23, Renee made it known that she was ready to retire to an easier life.

Perseus (Percy)

Percy is a quarter horse cross and also don't know a lot about Percy's early life. His former owner purchased him and started a non-profit V.E.T.S which offers military veterans the opportunity to learn horsemanship in a therapeutic environment. Percy has served as a therapy horse in this program for many years and has been a favorite in the barn due to his funny personality and love of attention. He has developed arthritis in his neck and is not comfortable being ridden anymore, so was no longer suited to the program. We estimate Percy is about 18 years old.

Coconuts

Coconuts was a last minute addition when we rescued Strike Fast (below). We saw him at the auction and instantly knew he would be the perfect ambassador for Trails End. Not only is he Tierra's "Mini-Me" but perhaps he is the perfect miniature horse! Everyone here has fallen head over heels in the love with this tiny mystery horse. We know absolutely nothing about his history. He came to us a stallion and has subsequently been gelded. He is approximately 15 years old and has travelled with us to events to promote Trails End. He recently walked on a stage with nearly 80 clapping audience members and didn't bat an eyelash!

In Loving Memory

Strike Fast

Strike Fast was a Standardbred Harness Racing horse that was rescued from the auction pipeline when we was 25 years old.  He won hundreds of thousands of dollars on the racetrack in both the US and Canada. Then he was sold to the Amish where he spent 19 years as a buggy and plow horse. When he was too old to be useful, he was sent to auction. Trails End President Angela saw his sad face in a huge auction lot and had to bring him home. He was in very bad condition with horrible dental issues. We started the slow process of rehabilitating him and he and Angela formed an instant bond. He was such a sweet angel of a horse. Right when he started to make a turn for the better, he developed a serious joint capsule infection that had a very poor chance of successful treatment. We made the decision to let him go in August of 2023.
