About Us

Vision

We aspire to live in a world where horse owners accept responsibility for their animals from birth through death and all horses have a chance to live out their days in safety and comfort. We strive to end equine suffering at later stages of life and to be a model farm for equine retirement.

Mission

We offer safe and loving sanctuary for retired and aged horses. This care includes all aspects of equine management including exercise, hoof care, veterinary, dental, nutrition and end of life care.

Purpose

Trails End exists to provide an alternative to owners who can no longer care for their aged equines or may be considering sending them to auction or rehoming.  As we have room, we also rescue elderly horses bound for slaughter or auction where they face an unknown fate of suffering.

Horse care is extremely expensive. and often owners find themselves in a situation where they can no longer afford to care for their animals. Without an alternative, thousands of horses are sent to slaughter each year in the United States. Horse slaughter is not legal here, so horses are shipped to Mexico or Canada, often enduring great cruelty and suffering.

While we can't help them all, we strive to make a difference where we can.

Angela has bachelor's degrees in Biology and Chemistry from Colorado State University and a Master's in Biology from Brown University. She spent the first 15 years of her career working in Insulin manufacturing at Eli Lilly and research and development at Pfizer.  In 2012, she opened her first business, Aerial Arts Fitness which she ran for the next decade. She still owns Tierra who is now happy and healthy at 27 and the inspiration for Trails End. Older horses will always hold a soft spot in her heart and helping them to live out their golden years in safety is highly rewarding.

Trails End is located on Angela's property in beautiful Voluntown, CT where she lives with her husband, two kids, 3 dogs, a cat, and 3 ducks. And of course, horses.

Jen with Possum

Jen Cargill - Director

Horses, and animals in general, have been a big part of Jen's life since she was a young girl. After graduating from the University of Connecticut with a BS in Animal Science and a BA in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, she was a marine mammal trainer for 13 years working with sea lions, seals, and whales. She transitioned into research in 2019, and began working in Drug Safety, Research and Development at Pfizer.

Her experiences with all these incredible animals have shaped who she is today and are ones that she wouldn’t trade for anything. Over the years, horses have always stood out to her.

She has dabbled in a variety of riding disciplines, but it is the incredible sport of gymnastics and dance on the back of a moving horse (equestrian vaulting) that has been her passion for the last 25 years. Over the course of that time, vaulting has introduced her to amazing people and horses all over the country. She has been lucky enough to perform in demonstrations at Equine Affaire and Dressage at Devon as well as compete both individually and as a part of a team at multiple National Championships.

Over the years she has trained many horses for vaulting and been able to coach vaulters from age 5-65, introducing people to the incredible joy of having a partnership with a horse. Horses have contributed so much to her life, and she is excited to be a part of something that will give back to them.
